Location: State Theatre
** Special Showing ** Sunday, August 10th, 4:00pm there will be a special post-film discussion by Dr. Richard Alley and Don Voigt.
Dr. Richard Alley is an Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences at Penn State. His experience includes three field seasons in Antarctica. He was among the scientists on the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to be awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Don Voigt, a Sr. Research Assistant in the Department of Geosciences has been at Penn State for 20 years. He organizes and conducts field research for the Penn State Ice and Climate Exploration group and has 12 seasons in Antartica.
Documentary film director Werner Herzog ("Grizzly Man") journeys to Antarctica to live alongside a community of researchers and scientists who may be called the most distant and daring of today. He is the first outsider to be let into this distant society. This documentary of his experience gives a masterful view of the world that exists beyond where we might imagine both above and below the glacial ice of the South Pole. Practically "at the end of the world" with only his cameraman accompanying him, he comes to witness beauty and imagery almost unbelievable to the eye, as though it were from another planet. He experiences the unique and interesting lilves of those who choose to call this cold and vast Antarctic land home during the austral summer from October to February. This small community of 1,100 people resides in McMurdo Station on Ross Island, which is headquarters to the National Science Foundation. From here, Herzog's footage covers the exotic depths of the cold Ross Sea all the way to the edge of the towering Mount Erebus volcano. Not only does Herzog discover and film this fascinating and matchless region, but he is able to capture the somewhat unusual characteristics and quirks of the unique people of this undiscovered community.
Rated G Cost $7.00 & $5.00 for students, seniors, and children 12 and under

Joel Meyerowitz: Bay Sky Porch June 3, 2008 - September 28, 2008 |
Add to Itinerary |
Location: Palmer Museum of Art
Phone: 814-865-7673
The constant change of the sea and unpredictability of the sea attracted photographer Joel Meyerowitz to Cape Cod and the city of Provincetown, Massachusetts, in the mid-1970s. After beginning his artistic career as a street photographer in New York City, Meyerowitz replaced his 35-millimeter with an 8 x 10 view camera and embraced the slower pace of life found on the Cape. The early influence of the photojournalistic snapshot did not entirely dissipate, however. A sense of immediacy and spontaneity emerges through Meyerowitz's inclusion of boats and shifting tide levels, creating a poetic tale of the languid, ever-changing life of the sea. This exhibition presents Meyerowitz's venture on Cape Cod, a portfolio of photographs grouped collectively under the title Bay Sky Porch, published in the late 1970s. In these works, which are drawn from the Palmer's permanent collection, Meyerowitz documents the changing light and atmospheric conditions, noting the subtle changes, "the book of hours," inscribed in nature. With the sea as the constant backdrop, Meyerowitz uses objects and structures associated with the human world, including awnings, thin columns, wooden railings, and painted boats, to frame his subject. The framing devices not only create unexpected components in the photographs, but also provide a point of entry for the viewer in an otherwise intangible and enigmatic seascape.
Please contact Joyce Robinson, curator, for more information on the exhibition at 814-865-7673 or through email at jhr11@psu.edu.
